BeppoSapone Posted 20 April , 2007 Share Posted 20 April , 2007 NOW AM CONFUSED AND IT DOESNT TAKE MUCH !!! He was in it in the first world war ?????? No, that is not possible. It was not formed until 1942. However, someone who had been in WW1 might also have been in REME in WW2
MBrockway Posted 22 April , 2007 Share Posted 22 April , 2007 This is all correct. My father was in the REME in the 1950's. Here's a link to a good general article on REME on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REME Hope that helps! Cheers, Mark
Guest mruk Posted 22 April , 2007 Share Posted 22 April , 2007 Also known as 'Royal Engineers Minus Education'. I believe Benny Hill served with them, and my Dad is ex-R.E.M.E. [1952-54] Cheers, Dave
NORTHDUK Posted 22 April , 2007 Share Posted 22 April , 2007 NOW AM CONFUSED AND IT DOESNT TAKE MUCH !!! He was in it in the first world war ?????? If he was in it in WW1, then it was not the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers that he served in. It is possible that this is some abbreviation relating to the Royal Engineers (RE) followed by a trade or location. I don't know enough about the REs in WW1 to comment further but it seems a likely bet. Gordon McLaughlin
Guest mruk Posted 22 April , 2007 Share Posted 22 April , 2007 Just to confuse things the Canadians have their own branch. See post 2-6 for REME formation, although I can't see the thread lasting that much longer without a WW1 connection I'm sorry to say. http://www.forces.gc.ca/emebranch/branch_history/flags_e.htm Cheers, Dave

BeppoSapone Posted 22 April , 2007 Share Posted 22 April , 2007 http://www.britmovie.co.uk/actors/c/009.html There is no overt mention of George Cole's father there. I was wondering if the "urban legend" is true?

womo Posted 22 April , 2007 Share Posted 22 April , 2007 Hi there, Just a thought, are you sure its REME? Reason being is that there were units such as the RME (Royal Marine Engineers) or REMT (Remount Department) As I say, just a thought. The lettering is similar and these were WW1 units/regiments. Hope this helps? Regards, Womo
