Dolphin Posted 20 April , 2007 Share Posted 20 April , 2007 Cnock 2Lt Cecil Herbert Stileman (formerly 14th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers) was killed in an accident while flying as observer BE 2c 4501 in of No 5 Sqn RFC on 29 February 1916. He was from Wimbledon in Surrey, and was aged 22 at the time of his death; he is buried at Lijssenthoek, Belgium. The pilot of 4501 was Lt G E Mills, who was injured. I hope that this helps you. Starlight Posted 23 April , 2007 Share Posted 23 April , 2007 Hi, A few extra details. Lt Stileman's was the last death of a pilot at Number 5 whilst the squadron was based at Abeele (sharing the airfield with Number 6 squadron). The squadron moved to Droglandt on the 13th March 1916 and by that time it was flying a single type of aircraft, the BE2c abd Be2d (up to late 1915 it had a variety of aircraft on charge - Avro 504, Vickers FB5 Gunbuses, a Bristol scout as well as the BE2) Regards Steve
