Old Tom Posted 19 April , 2007 Share Posted 19 April , 2007 Hello, I think 'First officer', i.e. the senior officer on a ship other than the Captain, 4 Rings is the usual rank badge for a ship's captain, one less for each rank below. In the Royal Navy three rings is a Commander and so on, except they have thin rings as well i.e. a Lieutenant Commander has two thick and one thin in between.
