Territorials and the police

I'm just looking at the service record of a man who attested on 8th September 1914. At that time he was a serving police officer, and had previously been a Territorial Force man, with the 4th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. In answer to the question 'Have you ever served in the Royal Navy, the Army etc...' it says 'yes,' gives the details, and then adds 'Service 1 year 8 months, discharged to join Police.'

Did joining the Police disqualify men from further service with the Territorials. I can see that it might create difficulties, but was leaving compulsory?
