6th Hauraki KIA KAHA Posted 12 April , 2007 Posted 12 April , 2007 Hi Its always a bit of an odd one the Simpson and the Donkey. As it is not a painting of Simpson, but a member of the New Zealand Medical Corps, that is painted from a photo. I will try and track down the real photo and and name of the man. If someone does not beat me to it. Pte Henderson NZEF Jonathan
ceebee Posted 19 April , 2007 Posted 19 April , 2007 By coincidence I was recently looking through several of my books about Simpson and the Gallipoli campaign which have images of the painting and the photo from which it was taken. The photo (see below) shows 3/258 Pte Richard (Dick) Alexander Henderson of the New Zealand Medical Corps and his donkey. The image was taken by 3/210 Pte James Gardiner Jackson, also of the New Zealand Medical Corps. There is a good account of the connection between the photograph and painting in chapter 7 (Photographic Mysteries) of Peter Cochrane's book Simpson and the Donkey: The Making of a Legend. The photo below is taken from Cochrane's book. The painting is taken from John Robertson's book Anzac and Empire: The Tragedy and Glory of Gallipoli. Another good reference can be found in Bloody Gallipoli: The New Zealanders' Story by Richard Stowers.
