hello all, i am trying to find out about the above man who i beleive was a relative from north somercoates. on the register of seamans services the date is given as 1902, is this a birth year or service year also his no. is j51419, any help at all in deciphering this would be very helpful. thanks john

You can download this record (which gives the ships he served on) for free at Kew, it only costs to copy there. Or you can look at the microfilm version.

Official Number: J51419 (official/service numbers are unique to each man)

Place of Birth: North Somercotes, Lincolnshire

Date of Birth: 05 March 1902

It looks like he entered th Navy in 1916, that's when the register for this number was opened.
