Garron Posted 30 March , 2007 Share Posted 30 March , 2007 Does anyone have any idea on this headstamp for a case i had off ebay? can't make out the bottom stamp looks like a pistol case as its rimmed but not big enough to be rifle round Thanks Garron
TonyE Posted 31 March , 2007 Share Posted 31 March , 2007 Probably 8mm M1892 French Ordnance revolver. If so should be 27.5mm long. The headstamp is actually ECP, which is Ecole Centrale de Pyrotechnie (Bourges), made in the second quarter of 1906. The unidentified mark at 6 o'clock is the supplier of the case metal. This was the standard French military pistol round in WWI, although they also had many thousands of Ruby 7.65mm semi-auto pistols. Garron Posted 31 March , 2007 Author Share Posted 31 March , 2007 Thanks Tony I would measure it but the case is quite corroded and only the head and about 5mm above it survived, Thanks Garron
TonyE Posted 31 March , 2007 Share Posted 31 March , 2007 I am sure that is what you have, but another identifier is the shape of the base. The 8mm M1892 normally has a very bevelled edge to the case, what is known as a Mauser "A" base. Regards TonyE
museumtom Posted 31 March , 2007 Share Posted 31 March , 2007 27r X 8mm Calibre. Forward tapered, rimmed case. Common name; 8mm Lebel revolver. Weapons;French Model 1892 revolver.
TonyE Posted 31 March , 2007 Share Posted 31 March , 2007 Calibre always comes first, 8 x 27mmmR. Regards TonyE
Garron Posted 31 March , 2007 Author Share Posted 31 March , 2007 Ok, the base is totally flat. more like a .455 revolver round Garron
TonyE Posted 1 April , 2007 Share Posted 1 April , 2007 OK, in that case (!) it might be an 11 x 17mm French Ordnance Model 1873. Ammunition was still being made for that revolver in 1906. The size will tell you whether it is for an 8mm or an 11mm round. Picture of M1873 round attched. Regards TonyE

Editor1688 Posted 10 May , 2023 Share Posted 10 May , 2023 Could anyone help me identify a round (and likely weapon) by its head stamp markings? Clockwise ECP - 13 - R - 1 I assume, as above, French WW1 (Ecole Centrale de PyrotechnieBourge). 1913 manufacture. It is 8mm calibre but overall length is around 36mm with bevelled rim. Many thanks J
