Martin Bennitt Posted 22 March , 2007 Share Posted 22 March , 2007 Alan Coren in one of his collections of humorous writings refers to a zeppelin raid in February 1915 which flattened two houses and damaged five more in his beloved Cricklewood. According to Coren one of the houses destroyed had been rented by Caruso as a tax dodge. Coren's point is that Caruso only moved out five months before, so 'narrowly escaped' the raid. Coren refers to the zeppelin as LR17, which I think must be an error, at least as far as the letters are concerned. Just wondered if anyone can tell me any more. thanks and cheers Martin B

Poor chap - he was in San Francisco for the earthquake and had a narrow escape there!

Dolphin Posted 22 March , 2007 Share Posted 22 March , 2007 Martin According to the authoritative records, there wasn't a German airship raid on the UK in 1915 between 19/20 January (Norfolk, Snettisham, Kings Lynn and Yarmouth) and the next on 14 April (Northumberland and Tyneside). The only raid in February 1916 was on 31 January/1 February, when The Midlands was attacked. Perhaps it was another month. Gareth

Unless Coren has got it hopelessly wrong -- he claimed to have got his info from the RAF museum -- perhaps the clue is the Zeppelin no. What about L17 (aka as LZ53) which a quick web search indicates carried out attacks on England before being destroyed in an attack on its shed? cheers Martin B
