AndrewBelsey Posted 19 March , 2007 Share Posted 19 March , 2007 My Great Uncle, (Stoker Petty Officer Christian Belsey) was on board destroyers, attached to the Harwich Force during the war. He left us a diary in which he refers to 'beef trips'? - He even put this in code. They were escorting ships to and from France, but I wondered if anyone knew anything more about them? Any clues would be wonderful as it's puzzled me for several years. Andy
Ken Lees Posted 19 March , 2007 Share Posted 19 March , 2007 Are you sure he wasn't ahead of his time and it should have read 'beer trips'?

ARABIS Posted 12 May , 2007 Share Posted 12 May , 2007 In Taffrail`s book "ENDLESS STORY", chapter V111 entitled "THE BEEF TRIP" describes how an escorted convoy went to Holland about once a week to buy surplus food. He suggests that this was to prevent any surplus food being sold to Germany & invalidating the blockade. David.

per ardua per mare per terram Posted 13 May , 2007 Share Posted 13 May , 2007 Welcome to the forum David, APB (Captain H Taprell Dorling DSO RN) Taffrail`s book "ENDLESS STORY" is highly recommended for learning about the destroyer war. He served on some of these "Beef Trips" too. Have you matched up the trips with the ships log?

Where would I find the ship's log? Andy
