charger Posted 10 December , 2003 Share Posted 10 December , 2003 How was a soldier allocated to a regiment. I can understand the PALS but as casualties grew did they allocate 100 men to this unit because they where 100 short. Did men for Yorkshire always join a Yorkshire regiment. Many thanks Steve
CROONAERT Posted 17 December , 2003 Share Posted 17 December , 2003 (Very) roughly...volunteers had some choice over their unit (unless no choice was stated, then they went to whichever unit needed them), but conscripts tended to be allocated to whoever needed them. Therefore, no, a Yorkshireman wasn't necessarily found in a Yorkshire Regiment. Dave.
