Guest pjm Posted 10 December , 2003 Share Posted 10 December , 2003 Further to an earlier posting of mine on the forum, I spent a fruitless day at the National Archives on Monday trying to prove my great-grandfather's service in submarines during WWI. I am now thinking of a different approach. Does anyone know if WWI submarines were built in shipyards on the River Tyne and in particular those in the Jarrow/Hebburn area? bmac Posted 11 December , 2003 Share Posted 11 December , 2003 Submarines were built at Armstrong Whitworth (Elswick?), Palmers (Jarrow) and Swan Hunter (Wallsend). These included some of the E21 Type (built between 1915-7), several W Class (all AW 1915-16), two G Class (both AW 1916), post war series H Class, 2 K Class (both AW 1917) and various M, L and R Class all completed post war. Palmers' involvement was small, part building E39 (with AW 1916) and E40 (AW 1917).
Bombadier Posted 12 December , 2003 Share Posted 12 December , 2003 You could try the Royal Navy Submarine Museum. http://www.rnsubmus.co.uk/ I don't know what records they hold, but it is worth a try. Nigel
