The 'UNKNOWN WORRIORS' Transport

Hello Chums,

I'm certain that a full length view of (in my view) the most famous Warship of WW.1 exists. The carrier of Great Britains 'Unknown Worrior' from France to Dover in 1920..... H.M.S. Verdun. I have managed to find several views of the deck of the vessal with her sad cargo aboard, but none of her in full profile.

Is there anyone out there in the forum who could possibly help?

Thank you in advance,

Seph :)

Given all the pomp and ceremony that accompanied the state funeral of the Unknown Soldier, culminating in burial in Westminster Abbey, I have often wondered at why a major warship wasn't used for the Channel journey rather than an unremarkable and undistinguished escort/destroyer.

Andy, I think that Verdun was chosen as a compliment to France.

Hello Chaps,

Tom,

I've read many articles that have been written about the choice of Warship. Your more or less on the mark with your comment. It's my understanding that the city of Verdun was the pinnacle of national pride for France, and as we all know, this led to one of if not THE Greatest blood lettings for France during the Great War. H.M.S. Verdun was chosen as a mark of respect to France for the sacrifice she made.
