Remembered Today:

Name of hospital ship

I recently acquired a trio of medals to a Canadian who had served with No.3 Canadian Stationary Hospital on Lemnos in the Dardanelles campaign. Relatively few members of the CEF (about 1500 in five medical units) participated in this theatre of operations.

My fellow ended up with dysentary and his records indicate he was invalided back to the UK on a hospital ship. Its name is writen instead of typed and looks like "Valdivia".

Do any of the Pals know of this ship?

Hello Terry

Start with this website and see what you can find. Borden Battery

The Ships List

This very comprehensive website contains a great deal of information on ship fleets and individual ships. It is often possible to obtain information on Great War ships used for troop transport including details on building, ownership, fate or sale to new owner, subsequent owners and gross tonnage. Terry,

Valdivia would be correct. A 7,137 grt passenger steamer built in 1911 (completed March 1912) for Soc. Générale de Transports Maritimes à Vapeur, Marseille. In 1915, she was lent to the Admiralty for service as a hospital ship. She was returned to her owners in 1919 and eventually broken up in 1933.

Valdivia's Official Number was 136743.

Best wishes,

Michael

Thanks, guys. I was pleased to acquire this group, as years ago I had a similar trio but had been forced to part with it in a trade. The only Canadian units to serve in the Dardanelles campaign were:

No.1 Stationary Hospital (Lemnos; then Salonika)

No.3 Stationary Hospital (Lemnos)

No.4 General Hospital (Salonika)

No.5 General Hospital (Salonika)

No.7 General Hospital (sent out first as No.5 Stationary Hospital) (Egypt)

Total Canadians involved were some 450 officers and nursing sisters and about 1000 men.
