Annette Burgoyne Posted 25 February , 2004 Author Share Posted 25 February , 2004 Hi Kevin The Battalion relieved the 5/K.S.L.I. in trenches near Boesinghe, from bays E24 to E28, with supports at Butt 17, The Nile and Skipton trenches and two companies in reserve on the canal bank. This chance meeting caused great pleasure and greetings were exchanged, which may have given the Germans an inkling of the relief. A heavy bombardment was opened on the 60th Brigade, which continued during the day (12th), becoming intense during the afternoon, a large nissan hut at the canal collaped killing three officers & one C.S.M. and wounding one officer. 19 other were killed and 46 wounded in verus parts of the line. Pte Eaton of Kidderminster is buried in Artillary Wood Cemetery, he may have originaly been buried behind the canal. I have info. on one chap who was killed the same day being buried behind the canal, he is also in Artillary Wood, cem. I've got to go to work now so will give you info. on where Pte. Phipps was on 18/08/17 later. Annette
Annette Burgoyne Posted 25 February , 2004 Author Share Posted 25 February , 2004 Hi again The Battalion had taken part in an attack near Langemarck on 16/08/17. They were in 3rd wave and captured all their objectives (see map below, the purple dots give final line held by K.S.L.I., two platoons of 12/R.B. attached on night of 16th to hold right wing). The War Diary records at end of text about the 16th, that during the remainder of tour, the Germans made several counter-attacks which were all smashed never getting within 150 yards. It also records HQ repeatedly shelled and under constant M.G. and rifle fire from Rat House. Battalion remained in and improved its captured positions, completing a continuous trench before being relieved on the night of 18th/19th. The War Diary does not give a break down of its casualties only that 39 other ranks were killed and five were missing along with 147 wounded. Soldiers Died records nine men killed on the 18th, only one as a known grave.
