Monet Posted 11 March , 2007 Share Posted 11 March , 2007 Well, here goes: Gentlemen and Ladies, this is a pencil sketch of a French Light Infantryman, circa 1916. Hope you enjoy...

John S Sargent Posted 13 March , 2007 Share Posted 13 March , 2007 Very good John, he looks like he's been through hell. Annette Thanks, Arnette. Not to seem churlish, but the silence otherwise is thunderous.
Gunboat Posted 13 March , 2007 Share Posted 13 March , 2007 I really like this piece you dan see the sheet exhaustion in his face.
Chris Boonzaier Posted 13 March , 2007 Share Posted 13 March , 2007 A good drawing, but is the helmet not a tad small?
Dan Morton Posted 14 March , 2007 Share Posted 14 March , 2007 John - First of all I like it very much. The fatigue is evident in his face and that's hard to get! I particularly like the sunken eyes. Second, I have to agree with Chris above - the helmet looks just a little small. Not much but enough to be noticeable. I'm looking at the Laurent Mirouze book on WWI infantry in color photos. The bell and bottom lip of the Adrian should come out a bit. I'm sure you could fix it! All the best, Dan
Monet Posted 14 March , 2007 Author Share Posted 14 March , 2007 Dan, Gunboat and Chris -- thanks. You don't learn anything in doing art without another set of eyes. It's appreciated. You know, I thought the same thing. I must have redone the helmet five times, believing I finally got it right. I have Mirouze here too, and Haselgrove & Radovic's book on Great War helmets; and I have an eBay French helmet on the way... Nothing beats actually having the item in your hands. Thanks again, folks!
Gunboat Posted 14 March , 2007 Share Posted 14 March , 2007 I wouldnt know whether the helmet was too small or not but to me that is almost irrellevant. The study is in the face and that is wonderfully captured. Dont mess with it.
Monet Posted 17 March , 2007 Author Share Posted 17 March , 2007 Thanks -- but I do think Dan and Chris were right about the helmet size -- maybe another version... Paper's cheap!
Dan Morton Posted 17 March , 2007 Share Posted 17 March , 2007 Gunboat - I didn't mean the critique as carping. I was trying to be helpful to JSS and improve his already superb art work. I get things wrong anatomically all the time and need the support of others to get them corrected. All the best, Dan
