Remembered Today:

LOSS HMS/s L10

Recommended Posts

Hi All

About a year ago some members were looking for a photo of Sumarine L10, I have discovered a photo

of sorts in "British Submarines of World War One" ,by Paul Kemp published by Warships Fotofax.

L10 is diving during trials in June 1918.Which were intended to show visibility or otherwise at various

depths of a dived Submarine . The photo is dark and shows the outline of her hull with the Tower and

Gun awash. I have been looking for a photo to go with my research into PO Samuel Hutchings who

was lost with L10 on 4th October 1918 .

This is the only photo I have manged to find of L10, not sure if it is the same you were referring to, but hope it helps.

On the morning of 3rd October 1918 H.M. Submarine L.10 was in the vicinity of a German convoy, which had, the previous night, been attacked by British Destroyers. That afternoon a number of German ships were spotted searching the area for survivors and L.10 signalled her intention of attacking the German squadron, which consisted of two Destroyers, S33 and S34, and two torpedo boats heading from Zeebrugge to Germany. S34 struck a mine with the result that the other ships were forced to ignore the danger of further mines to rescue the sinking destroyer’s crew. A dual began when L.10 moved in for the kill and fired a torpedo at S33. S33 was immediately hit suffering severe damaged. Initial German thoughts of another mine were dispelled when L.10’s conning tower broached the surface. The damaged S33 managed to bring her guns to bear and through persistent shelling sunk the submarine. S33 sunk a little later at 11.43 hrs, as a result of L.10’s torpedo, with the loss of five men.

I did some research into Able Seaman William Maynard, RN who was also killed when this L10 was sunk.

regards, Steve

Dear all

I have tried to post the photo L10 i have, but it looks more like a white feather on black hat than a Submarine diving.

Thank you all for your help ,and Steve your photo is great thank you . I thought i had carried quite

a lot of research on Hutchings but it would now seem i still have far to go.

Many Thanks

Colin :D
