Large scale demonstrations begin in Petrograd (St. Petersburg) in Russia, concerned over rumours that bread rationing is about to be imposed upon the city thousands take to the streets. Within days the Tsar has fallen. The Russian Revolution, perhaps the most important revolution of all time and one of the Great Wars most enduring legacies, has begun.

Yesterday's weather notes in The Times explains how the weather played a part in the timing of the Revolution, 1916-17 being a particularly severe winter, and an extreme case of the North Atlantic Oscillation.

Furthermore it would be a slight improvement in the weather that brought out the crowds during the revolutionary days, between the 8th March and the 16th the weather was warmer and sunnier instead of the usual Russian cold.
