Remembered today 8/3/2007 on the GWF:

Orderly Nurse Madge Neill Fraser of the Scottish Women's Hospital, who died of Typhus on the 8th March 1915 in Serbia, and is buried in the Chela Kula Military Cemetery at Nish.

Madge was the daughter of Mrs M Neill Fraser of 50 Grange Rd, Edinburgh.

Before the war she was a prominent golfer with the Midlothian County Ladies Golf Association.

See the following link: http://www.mclga.com/Centenary/Personaliti...rMadgeNeill.htm

Look forward to hearing more of her story.

Madge's brother Patrick was also a casualty

See 'The American Golfer' Foreign Notes, London, September 12, 1916

It is peculiarly sad to have to mention that Lieutenant Patrick Neill Fraser, of the North Stafford Regiment, attached to the Border Regiment, who held a prominent business position in Edinburgh, has been killed. His sister was the well known lady player, Miss Madge Neill Fraser, who went as one of a party of Scottish nurses to Serbia in the early days of the war and died of typhus fever at Kragujevatz in March of last year.

Michael - Thanks for the additional info on Madge's brother, and the link to The American Golfer (interesting to read about Spalding also). Cheers, Frev.

Hi Frev

Here is the notice of the death of Nurse Margaret Neill Fraser as it appeared in the Edinburgh Evening News in 1915

I agree with Drew, thanks Ian. A very confident looking young lady. And an all round sportswomen it appears.

It's interesting to note that they call her Margaret, which seems to have been her mother's name - wonder if they made a mistake - I've never heard Madge used as a shortened version of Margaret before. (usually Marg, Maggie, Mag or Ret)

Cheers, Frev
