Risby Posted 7 December , 2003 Share Posted 7 December , 2003 A family story has it that my grandfather GW Spencer in the 9 Londons, met his brother James Spencer MM who was marching in an approaching column of the East Kents. Were these units ever there? I expect it would be in 1918. Thanks
Glosters Posted 8 December , 2003 Share Posted 8 December , 2003 The 1/5th East Kents served in Mesopotamia, but the 9th Londons spent the whole war in France/Belgium. Steve
Geoff Parker Posted 8 December , 2003 Share Posted 8 December , 2003 There were no battalions from the London Regiment serving in Mesopotamia, only Egypt and Palestine. 1st and 2nd Battalions of 9th Londons amalgamated in 1917, and neither left Europe. So unless your grandfather was then transferred to another battalion of the London Regiment serving in Palestine or perhaps to another regiment. The meeting in Mesopotamia couldn't have happened. I dont know the 1/5th E.Kents movements without looking it up, did they go to Palestine at all?? Geoff
andyspiller Posted 11 December , 2003 Share Posted 11 December , 2003 Chaps Just to be clear, 1/9th & 2/9th London Regt (QVR) were amalgamated in Jan 1918. Kind regards Andy PS There is no mention of GW Spencer in the regimental history.
