Italians in France 1918

I read this thread with great interest. I recently found an Italian helmet (WW1) which has inscribed in it (in the liner) 9-21-1918 YPERS. It is a stensilled infantry helmet with 57th on it. Does anyone have any clue as to why it was picked up on the YPERS battlefield?

In Jan 1918, some 60,000 men were sent in Labour battalions for organising defensive works on the WF. Some of them were caught up in the March/April offensives, picked up abandoned arms and joined in. Most were C3 physical category.

So, that would explain....
