Hooter Posted 7 December , 2003 Share Posted 7 December , 2003 I have a collection of photographs, taken by my grandfather, who was a ships writer on HMAS Sydney and HMS Southampton. I am slowly working through them, trying to draw out as much information as I can, to fill in the details of his career and experiences – tantalisingly, there are pencilled remarks on the back of a few of them, but almost never enough to tell the full tale. Amongst them are two described as ‘Convoy 6th May 1918’. By this stage he was serving on Southampton, so when I next visit the PRO I’ll have a look at her log to see what I can work out from there, but I was wondering, what sources are there on the identification of convoy’s, their escorts and destinations? Hooter Posted 18 December , 2003 Author Share Posted 18 December , 2003 Dave, Thanks for the link. I visited the PRO yesterday and had a look at Southampton's log for May 1918. She left Rosyth on the 4th, met up with a convoy (unspecified) on the evening of the sixth, saw a convoy ship torpedoed or mined on the 7th, and was back in Rosyth on the 8th. I guess it's time to start looking for info on merchant losses cheers
