hzibell Posted 24 February , 2007 Share Posted 24 February , 2007 I have found the service record for Tom Knowles who was born in Folkingham Lincolnshire. He is the younger brother of my G Grandmother. It states that he was washed overboard on 10 October 1914 from TB No 7 in the vicinity of North Knock Buoy. I also found a medal was awarded to the man who tried to save him. What was a TB and the previous ship he was assigned to was Actaeon would the TB have something to do with this? And where was North Knock Buoy? Can I access any of his other records? Or is this all I will get? I have a photo of him with his sisters and the sheet from NA. horatio2 Posted 24 February , 2007 Share Posted 24 February , 2007 Depending on his Official Number, you may find his original enlistment papers at the Fleet Air Arm Museum. If you could post his number I will let you know if his papers are there. TB = Torpedo Boat. North Knock is, I believe off the Kent coast.

Heather Yes, that is his official number ('J' for seamen and communications ratings). His enlistment should be in the ledger at the FAAM.
horatio2 Posted 24 February , 2007 Share Posted 24 February , 2007 HMS ACTAEON was the torpedo school at Sheerness 1905 - 1922 and during WW1 was also a base for patrol craft.
hzibell Posted 24 February , 2007 Author Share Posted 24 February , 2007 How do I access the FAAM files can I do it online? Torpedo Boats were they like submarines today? Regards, Heather
horatio2 Posted 24 February , 2007 Share Posted 24 February , 2007 The FAAM documents are not on line. You need to contact the museum for photocopies. Details at: http://www.fleetairarm.com/pages/research/archivep1.htm Torpedo Boats were small coastal patrol craft, not submarines. Have a look here for the sort of thing:- http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/torpedo_boats.htm
