Remembered Today:

Help with understanding medal engraving

Firstly, thanks for any help.

Having recently become interested in genealogy, I went off to find Grandads WW1 medals, at present I have just the one (the others are in the loft somewhere). I do not know his rank, service number or regiment at present, but hopefully the engraving on the outside edge of the medal could shed some light. It is as follows: 251 2 DVR A POWELL R

Thank you in advance.

Hello and welcome,

The number is his service number.

DVR is for Driver

R and I figure there is an A after it? = Royal Artillery

Others will lead you from here!

Neil, thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, the medal has a few marks on it so reading the engraving was a little difficult. I have looked again and there is an A after the R. So thanks. There may also be another number between the 251 and the 2. I'll have to get the magnifying glass out. Thanks.
