Can anyone recommend a book or cd which would explain the terminology and meaning of the trench, i am presently reading the MacRaes Battalion, and would like to know what a redoubt and a sap is. Also weapons like a trench mortar

A redoubt is a heavily fortified postion in a defensive line. A sap is a trench, normally zig-zag in pattern , projecting forward towards an enemy position. The men who dug them were sappers, hence the basic rank of the Royal Engineers. A trench mortar; a small calibre, short barrelled artillery piece with a short range and high trajectory used by the infantry.
