JANEVISON Posted 10 February , 2007 Share Posted 10 February , 2007 I am trying to research a gt grandfather's service history and have a copy of his service record. He served between 1 April 1884 to September 1889 when it records Run as cause of discharge. What does this mean? His name was Arthur Joseph Keyte born 1866 although gave his date of birth 1865 and so was 17 on enlistment. The Division was Chatham. Service Record No 2867. The ships he served on were Achilles, Garrick, Humber what would have been going on between 1885 and 1888?

horatio2 Posted 10 February , 2007 Share Posted 10 February , 2007 Had he been 'recovered' from desertion he would have faced a lengthy sentence of detention. As it was he ran away from the RM Barracks, Chatham and was never seen again. This despite his name being published as a deserter in the Police Gazette. Most deserters jumped ship in attractive foreign places like Australia, South Africa and Canada, where they started up new lives. Your man clearly preferred UK. Unforunately the Fleet Airm Museum does not have his papers.
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 10 February , 2007 Share Posted 10 February , 2007 'what would have been going on between 1885 and 1888' There was the Sudan Campaign, with the failure to relieve Gordon in 1885. There was also a scare over war with Russian and the beginnings of a naval arms race.
