John Butt Posted 8 February , 2007 Share Posted 8 February , 2007 I've been trying to track down W.J. Dowdell who served on H.M.S. Boadicea at Jutland and later on the Sir John Moore at Ostend and Zeebrugge. He was assistant paymaster. Having just received a copy of his marriage certificate we now know he was in the Royal Naval Reserve. I've tried using the National Archive online ordering for documents but his name doesn't appear. Can anyone help with suggestions on how I can find out more. Thanks John
kin47 Posted 8 February , 2007 Share Posted 8 February , 2007 Hello William John Dowdell was commissioned as a Temporary Assistant Paymaster, RNR on 11 November 1914. He was assigned to BOADICEA in April 1915. He was promoted to Paymaster Lieutenant on 11 November 1918. He had had been in SIR JOHN MOORE since 19 November 1917. Hope this helps a bit. John Butt Posted 8 February , 2007 Author Share Posted 8 February , 2007 Thanks Don, May I ask the source of the information please? John
kin47 Posted 8 February , 2007 Share Posted 8 February , 2007 Hello John Sources are NAVY LIST June 1916 and NAVY LIST January 1919 issues. Someone with a more continuous run of LISTs could supply a more complete picture. All best don
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 9 February , 2007 Share Posted 9 February , 2007 No officer papers are not online, but at Kew. Look through the online catalogue at ADM 240. RNR service records are not online anyway, the are only for branches of the RN.
John Butt Posted 9 February , 2007 Author Share Posted 9 February , 2007 Thanks again Don. To: per ardua per mare per terram - I've tried the online catalogue for ADM 240 but without success. Thansk for the suggestion though. John
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 9 February , 2007 Share Posted 9 February , 2007 How about: ADM 240/82 Services of RNR Officers. Dates of seniority 1913-1916 ADM 240/83 Services of RNR Officers. Dates of seniority 1916-1922?
John Butt Posted 10 February , 2007 Author Share Posted 10 February , 2007 How about: ADM 240/82 Services of RNR Officers. Dates of seniority 1913-1916 ADM 240/83 Services of RNR Officers. Dates of seniority 1916-1922? Thanks that may help narrow it down a bit. So far I've used the online ordering service and in the search I've used the name Dowdell and the ref ADM 240 with negative results. I'll try again using the references you've kindly given. Otherwise It's going to be a visit to NA which I'm longing to do as I've another dozen or so people to look up while I'm there! I don't think a day is going to be long enough!!
