historydavid Posted 9 February , 2007 Share Posted 9 February , 2007 Kath, Don't know about a sailing ship at Jutland but there was a steamer, the Danish N.J. Fjord. being inspected by a German TBD, midway between the approaching Battlecruiser Fleets. The cruiser Galatea spotted the TBD and the rest, as they say, is history. Source OH. Best wishes David
Adrian Roberts Posted 9 February , 2007 Share Posted 9 February , 2007 The middle of a battle with 12-inch shells flying around was the not the safest place for a sailing ship. Doveton Sturdee may well have "thoughtfully avoided" the Fairport but one can imagine his language when she got in the way! The "German cruiser breaking away pursued by a British one" is less likely to have been Dresden, than the Nurnberg pursued by the Kent which later sank her - Dresden escaped because the British cruisers were occupied with other targets.
