AndrewBelsey Posted 8 February , 2007 Share Posted 8 February , 2007 I have one of my Great Uncle's personal war diaries from the period of January to October 1917. I've transcribed it and made a highlights version too, if anyone's interested? (His other diaries were destroyed!) Redgauntlet was an Admiralty R Class Destroyer, part of the Harwich Force. It's not particually exciting, but has a 'friendly fire' incident - they depth charge a British sub! They hit a mine, get bombed by German planes, chace German destroyers and have a lot of patrols and escort duty. Part of it was written in code, but as it was only shifting on one letter, my dad cracked it. They go on regular 'beef trips' (was in code - 'cffg usjqt') Does anyone know what a beef trip could be? He also refers to a signal called 'Q6'. Does anyone know what that could be, Please?
joseph Posted 8 February , 2007 Share Posted 8 February , 2007 APB, I would be interested in reading the diary, off hand cannot answer your questions but may be able to in contex. A 'beef trip' in the second war was landing a small boat in spain and collecting the Victuals that was short in the UK. Regards Charles
