sotonmate Posted 5 February , 2007 Share Posted 5 February , 2007 Malcolm Remembered today. I looked up the vessel "LOFOTEN" this morning in a Wrecks Listing. Torpedoed by UB59 7 miles ESE of Start Point (Devon) whilst en route from Glasgow to Le Havre with general cargo. Of the 21 crew 17 were lost. The Captain and 3 crew recovered to an upturned boat and were refused calls of help by the U-Boat. 9 Hours later were picked up by a patrol vessel and landed in Dartmouth. Best wishes Sotonmate
Michael Lowrey Posted 6 February , 2007 Share Posted 6 February , 2007 Oliver Lörscher has recently looked into this one this and has concluded the ship UB 59 sank wasn't Lofoten but rather Holmtown with UB 38 apparently responsible for sinking of Lofoten. I have seen the primary source documents and fully concur in his assessment. UB 59's attack was not in the vicinity of Start Point but rather near the Shambles LV, which is where the body of two Holmtown crewmembers washed ashore. historydavid Posted 7 February , 2007 Share Posted 7 February , 2007 Michael, do the original dates for these events still hold good now that that the U-boats have changed? 6th February 1918 Holmtown per THM 3rd February 1918 Lofoten per ub.net Best wishes David
Michael Lowrey Posted 7 February , 2007 Share Posted 7 February , 2007 David, Holmtown and Lofoten should both be listed as being sunk on the 3rd. Note that the earlier date is fully supported by the primary source documents Oliver found at TNA on the loss of Holmtown.
