My great grandfather's brother was killed aboard the HMS "Invincible" on May 31, 1916. I would like to know what a 3rd Class Waiter is please, thanks.

As far as I am aware it is exactly what it says.

He was probably a steward in the officers' mess etc. The third class would denote his level of training and responsibilities.

If you can give us his name/number we may be able to track down some more.

Hi Jude,

I have just joined the list & think I can clarify this for you - The RN never used the term "waiter" - they were called Stewards, The rate of 3rd Class Waiter would not exist - I think your man would have been a Writer 3rd Class.

A Writer was a sort of clerk/secretary who would have worked in the Ships Office.

Normally a Battlecruiser would carry several writers of all levels - the Writer 3rd Class would have been about equivalent to an Able Seaman, the 2nd class Writer a Leading Seaman, & Writer 1st class a Petty Officer. A chief Writer would have been a CPO.

If you have his WWI medals, his ON(Official number) will be on them, & his Service record will be available in the pRO.

Best wishes!

Bryan (RNCVR)
