Chris_B Posted 1 December , 2003 Share Posted 1 December , 2003 I'm trying to locate photos (web or otherwise) of the following HMS ships: Ganges (found 1886 on web) Minotaur (around 1900) Agincourt (around 1900) Hannibal (around 1900) Duke of Wellington (around 1903) Hecla (around 1905) Bonaventure (around 1906) Blenheim (around 1908) Vengeance (around 1908) Bellerophon (around 1909) Fisgard (around 1911) Venus (around 1912) Q3 (around 1916) Barranca (around 1917) Hollyhock (around 1923) Vernon (around 1920/23) I know the NMM have some of these in their photo catalogue, but I'm looking for free/cheap sources to begin with. Thanks, Chris Burge
Dee Posted 1 December , 2003 Share Posted 1 December , 2003 Hi Chris I found this site: www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk while I was trying to search for HMS Duncan, have just had a quick look and it appears to offer details of Minotaur and Agincourt, may possibly hold more. Hope this helps, good luck in finding your pics. Dee
healdav Posted 2 December , 2003 Share Posted 2 December , 2003 Vernon was, and maybe still is, the RN's mine warfare establishment near Portsmouth - it was famous in WW2 for its mine disposal expertise. I'm not sure when it opened, and at one time the name was held by a ship, but by around 1920, I think it was the shore station.
Terry Denham Posted 2 December , 2003 Share Posted 2 December , 2003 HMS Vernon was established as a torpedo school on 26.04.1876 although it had been in existence since 1872. It was a ship at this time, first in Fountain Lake and then Porchester Creek, Hants. During WW1 it was an Auxiliary Patrol Depot Ship. HMS Vernon became a shore base on 01.10.1923 at Old Gunwharf, Portsmouth. It was merged into HMS Nelson in 1986 and closed 01.04.1996.
healdav Posted 2 December , 2003 Share Posted 2 December , 2003 There's a photo of them all in Janes' 1914 and Janes' Fighting Ships of World War 1 (which was brought out a few years ago).
