I've added a little more detail on the casulty list to my 'scratch pad'.

MILLER Henry John probably: Stoker 1st Class 300159, H.M.S. "Gaillardia.", Royal Navy. Died Friday 22nd March 1918. Commemorated on CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, Kent. Panel 29.

Sentance George William

Number: K/34787 Unit: Royal Navy.

Rank: Stoker 1st Class Commemorated: Chatham Memorial, Kent.

He was the Son of William and Sarah Sentance who lived at Alford Road, Mablethorpe. He was born at Somersby and was the brother of Charles Edward Sentance who is also commemorated on the memorial. He was 23 years old when he died in March 1918.

George found himself serving aboard H.M.S. Gaillardia. Again there is doubt if this was George’s only ship - it was, sadly, his last. H.M.S. Gaillardia was a Sloop of the Flower class. All vessels in this class were built on contract, along merchant ship lines, to facilitate production. The 72 vessels of the Acacia, Azalea and Arabis types, which formed the class, were similar in their warship appearance only differing primarily in variations of armament. The first two types were fitted as minesweepers and were shared between the Grand Fleet, Queenstown and the Mediterranean. H.M.S. Gaillardia, being approximately 1250 tons, was built by Blyth SB and launched on the 19th May 1917, as a minesweeper. She met her fate when she was hit by a mine off the Orkneys during the night of the 22nd - 23rd March 1918. Her armament consisted of 2 x 4in and 1 x 3pdr AA guns.

A Commander RN is equivalent to an army Lieutenant Colonel. His Majesty's Ship Gaillardia was too small to qualify to be commanded by a Captain RN and probably too small to rate an individual photo - apart from crew and family members.

Did the group include his China medal? It's a nice and topical group for this year to a man who took part in 'various expeditions connected with the suppression of the slave trade;' the Navy's work suppressing the slave trade did not stop in 1807!

http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/flower.htm for photos of some sloops.

One of my Great Grand Uncles died of the wounds he suffered when H.M.S. Gaillardia hit one of our own mines/was torpedoed by the enemy.

He was the last of those on the list shown in this forum, Harry Double aged 24.

He was one of 13 children and from Fleetwood in Lancashire.

His father was a trawler owner/Skipper. Early in the war Charles Henry Double signed on with the Royal Naval Reserves as a Warrant Officer serving at Scapa Flow working on the Boom Defense.

Six of his sons served in WW1 and he lost two of them in the last year of conflict. Harry, in March aboard Gaillardia and, Arthur Patrick who was in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Arthur was on his way home with his comrades on RMS Leinster when it was his by two torpedoes and sunk off Dun Laoghaire, Ireland.

Harry died on the 26th March and his death was registered in Falmouth, not in Scotland. Would he have been taken all the way to Falmouth for his injuries to be treated or, was it simply the place where his ship was registered. Is there any way to find out further information on his injuries or, where he would have been treated?

Just in case anyone is still following this posting: I recently visited Christ Church in Malacca and noted the name of John Sharpey Schafer on the WW1 memorial in the church (3rd name from the bottom).  It records his time as a rubber planter in what was then the Straights Settlement.

By all accounts he was a remarkable man.

Christ Church was originally the Dutch church and was handed over to the East India Company in 1824 when the British took possession of Malacca.  It is the oldest Protestant church in SE Asia

My Nan's brother lost his life serving on HMS Gaillardia. He was Charles Henry Sinclair Stoker 1st Class. Charles is remembered on a war service plaque in St Mary's RC Church, Stow Hill, Newport, Wales where he lived at the time of his death. His brother died at the Somme 6 months later. Both are remembered on another memorial plaque in West Ham Parish Church. The plaque is dedicated to parish members who lost their lives during the 1914 - 1919 war and mentions 'C.H. Sinclair' and 'J.V.Sinclair'. Their parents and siblings lived in Plaistow, London.
