What does the prefix UD mean on his regimental no.? What is written in brackets after the units name? What do the remarks all mean?

Lionboxer,

I don't know if its of interest to you but the family grave is in Kirkhill Cemetery in the Co. Antrim village of Connor. It has a grave marker that lists the three brothers; two were officers in the West Riding Regt. I have a rather poor photo of the grave if you want it.

regards

6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons (Service Squadron)

Could the scrawl in the brackets be SS for service squadron? Note his arrival date 3/10/15 directly coincides with Ulster Div arrival in France. He may have been with the advance party.

November 1914 :formed in Enniskillen, as Divisional Cavalry for 36th (Ulster) Division

June 1916 : transferred to X Corps

Mid 1917 : unit broken up, personnel moved to 9th (Service) Bn, Royal Irish Fusiliers

Thanks Pals. I'm not really interested in Darragh (that sounds awful) but in the man he's burried next to in St Raquier cemetery. I've posted another topic about him under "died by burning" and because Darragh "died" two days before my man Davey I wondered if there was some connection with the two men as there seems to be a consensus that there was an accident of some sort. As we all know it's easy to go off on a tangent with these researches but sometimes it leads to what we're looking for. I'm sorry the MIC isn't very clear but can you tell me what comments in the remarks column mean (just out of interest!!). I don't suppose anyone has the 6th Dragoons war diary for this period? Incidentally Davey arrived in France 16/12/14 with the Indian Cavalry Division as a regular soldier.

Lionboxer,

War Diary of Service Squadron, 6th Dragoons has been transcribed by Phillip Tardif and is posted here: -

http://www.northirishhorse.org/memorium/ww1/WarDiaries.html

Look at the bottom of the page for the final link.

Although I don't think it will help as he seems not to have been transfered to the Royal Irish Fusiliers.

Hugh

Des,

Thanks on behalf of Doug and Phillip, don't forget Gerry Chester who pulled it all together.

Cheers

Once again thankyou for your input Pals but I think my theory was just a red herring, it least it caused some debate and added to our general knowledge. My man Davey was definately 6 Dragoons Indian Cavalry Division. War diary anyone?

I don't have the diary you want. This is the reference: -

WO 95/1176 6 Inniskilling Dragoons 1914 Oct. - 1916 Dec.

I would suggest a post here: -

After searching the forum for Inniskilling Dragoons there are only two hits: -
