Could a pal tell me which regiment this chap was likely to be in from his number but also the fact that he was only entitled to the BWM. My friend feels that India may be involved, also why North Staffs and then Rifle brigade or visa versa. Thats if Rifle Brigade is his other regiment. I know the north staffs was the regiment which entitled him the the medal but any idea which he would have been in first either the North Staffs or the Rifle bigade.

Many thanks in advance.

Kevin.

Kevin,

His medal Roll from the Rifle Brigade. The Rifle Brigade Territorial Rolls are great for giving you dates overseas etc. As you can see he was N. Staffs first (4th) ard then Rifle Brigade, the 23rd R.B.'s was the N.W. Battalion.

Kevin,

23rd Rifle Brigade's history is an uneventful one. The Battalion was employed on Internal Security duties throughout its stay in India; first at Multan where it was quartered in the Edwardes Barracks, then from 22nd July 1918 at Bareilly in Clyde Barracks; one company was at Amritsar, according to the Indian Order of Battle, in May 1916, but there were no other detachments.

The Battalion was demobilized in India, by 12th July the numbers were reduced to fifty, on 25th October it moved to Sialkot and the cadre was not finally dispersed until February 1920.

Hope this helps you a little.

Andy
