MikeW Posted 28 November , 2003 Share Posted 28 November , 2003 I have just come across the record of David Plaistowe who served with the rank of AM.2 at Royal Naval Air Station Roehampton. He was subsequently commissioned as a Temporary Probationary FSL and gained his ticket on the 1st October 1916. He saw action in France with Naval 6 but served most of his career at home establishment. How common was it for one of the "men" to gain a commission in the RNAS? I must confess that this is the first instance that I have come across. Mike
Andrew Smith Posted 29 November , 2003 Share Posted 29 November , 2003 G'day Mike, Bert Hinkler also rose from the ranks, he enlisted as a rating with the RNAS in August 1914, and gained a comission in June 1918 flying Camels with 28 Squadron in Italy. Admittedly this was with the RAF. Andrew.
MikeW Posted 30 November , 2003 Author Share Posted 30 November , 2003 Hey Andrew, and I always thought the RAF was even more "elitist" than the Navy, who let's face it, were not happy with all the civilians suddenly becoming Flight Sub Lieutenants without any Naval background!
