squirrel Posted 19 January , 2007 Share Posted 19 January , 2007 Was asked about this the other day and wonder if anybody can help. Troopship Marquette was torpedoed in the Aegean October 1915 with considerable loss of life including 10 NZ nurses. The ship left Alexandria bound for Salonika but the nurses apparently should have been on another troopship that sailed the same day. Question is, why were the nurses embarked on the Marquette and who was responsible for the change in arrangements and giving the order? Any assistance greatly appreciated. alliekiwi Posted 19 January , 2007 Share Posted 19 January , 2007 There's a bit of a rundown about the Marquette on rootsweb here. My hubby's great uncle was one of the NZ medical corp on board who survived. The question about the nurses will probably never be able to be answered. There was a hospital ship, the Grantully Castle, which left the same day, also bound for Salonika, so many people have wondered over the years why the nurses were not aboard that ship instead. The british authorities apparently promised the NZ government information about an investagtion into the sinking - but a report was never handed over.
