MelPack Posted 15 January , 2007 Share Posted 15 January , 2007 Hello Nick It is the code for the theatre of war entered. A complete list is on the main site: http://www.1914-1918.net/theatrecodes.htm Regards Mel
nicburch Posted 15 January , 2007 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2007 Mel, thanks for that. Perhaps you could clarify the following. The man i am looking at was in 86th Brigade, 29th Div. who i think landed in Gallipoli in April 1915 and yet the mc states Date of entry therein as 15/12/15? Chris_Baker Posted 15 January , 2007 Share Posted 15 January , 2007 If you are sure of his unit, it implies he arrived with a draft to replace casualties rather than with the original contingent.
nicburch Posted 15 January , 2007 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2007 Thanks Chris. My man was with the 2nd Battalion;what would have been the reasons he didn't go with the original contingent.
Max Posted 15 January , 2007 Share Posted 15 January , 2007 Given that the date of entry was 15/12/1915 it does seem a little bit pointless to reinforce a force that was already evacuating
Chris_Baker Posted 15 January , 2007 Share Posted 15 January , 2007 It might seem so, but it happened. I have researched several men who went to Gallipoli around this time. Nick, the most likely reason is the date of his enlistment. To arrive in December 1915, my guess he enlisted mid 1915. 14 weeks basic training syllabus and a bit of hanging around while he was posted. per ardua per mare per terram Posted 15 January , 2007 Share Posted 15 January , 2007 Remember that there were no jet aircraft, all these men went out by sea and when they set out they weren't evacuating. I presume it means that he landed in the Gallipoli theatre, which could mean one of the islands (Mudros etc) rather than the peninsula.
