Remembered Today:

Another misspelt stone at Karasouli: 8/17378 Pte SEARY/LEARY G F

8/17378 Pte SEARY/LEARY G F, South Wales Borderers

cwgc.org has SEARY G F:

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...asualty=4031916

MIC has two entries for this number,

SEARY, George Frederick:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...Edoc_Id=5267690

and SEARY, Frederick G.:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...Edoc_Id=5267686

But the actual stone reads "G. F. LEARY":

http://www.wargraves.org.uk/gravedetails.asp?id=575908

-----

Also a discrepancy in a service number:

49623 or 19623 Spr CARRUTHERS W G, Royal Engineers

His service number is listed as 49623 at CWCG:

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...casualty=622994

and in the MIC search

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...Edoc_Id=1867897

But the actual stone most definitely reads 19623.

http://www.wargraves.org.uk/gravedetails.asp?id=575021

I know it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish a "4" from a "1" when the stone is heavily worn, but this one appears to be otherwise quite deeply engraved.

Is this an error too? And can anything be done?

Thanks and regards,

Adrian

Answer.....

In both cases the headstone is in error.

The fix to SEARY is already on order and CARRUTHER's number change will now be put into the system for future correction.
