broadtown Posted 12 January , 2007 Share Posted 12 January , 2007 Hi, Just one more thing. Researching airfields and aerodromes I feel I should consider Rollestone. What does the list think? Should I include this and the barrage balloon sites in an archaeology of airfields or not? Bob Clarke
delta Posted 12 January , 2007 Share Posted 12 January , 2007 Rollestone was major site in the development of ballooning and army avaiation - I would certainly add it
Moonraker Posted 12 January , 2007 Share Posted 12 January , 2007 I would include, but I'm biased (Rollestone being in Wiltshire); but then the WWI balloon school at nearby Tilshead should also be included. Moonraker
delta Posted 12 January , 2007 Share Posted 12 January , 2007 that's fair
broadtown Posted 12 January , 2007 Author Share Posted 12 January , 2007 that's fair And a good demonstration of how large this project is getting! However I tend to agree. Whats in the back of my mind is the fact that airfield construction stops around 1946/7 and its more of a question of why sites were retained after that. This should allow me to discuss a large number of sites as they opened, effectively a front heavy topic I think. But one that has already become an enjoyable task. Any other balloon sites bar those two and Farnborough spring to mind? Bob
