The Medal Roll in WO372 states George V Bult, Regimental No 80286, Rank DoT was awarded the Victory Medal (recorded on RE/1011342 Page 8746) and British Medal (same reference), and ’15 Star (RE/3B Page 1765). Theatre of War first served in was (3) Egypt, date of entry therein was 12-7-15. Given this date of entry, can any member please narrow down the regiment/corps etc in which he may have enlisted? By 1918/19 he is recorded in Voters records as George Victor Bult 80286 Spr., 83rd Fld Coy, R.E so he seems to have been RE throughout.

83rd Field Company RE were part of the 20th (Light) Division

see http://www.1914-1918.net/20div.htm

they went to the Western Front in July 1915 and remained there for the rest of the war

You mention that the info re his being with the 83rd Co. RE comes from a 1918/19 doc

So is it possible that back in July 1915 he was serving with another Field Co., RE?

Landing in Egypt could, as Martin has suggested, indicate that he was heading for Gallipoli

NB: This next is pure speculation only and is to be treat with caution

But, the date 12th July 1915 fits in with the build-up for Suvla

The last elements of 10th (Irish) Division were expected at Mudros by the 18th July

And that Division had with them the 85th Field Company RE

Could it be that 85 has been mistaken for 83?

I am not sure how you can take any of this further, but if the NA holds a War Diary for either of these units then that may tell you something

Best of luck with your research

Michael
