Remembered Today:

MIC card - leads to no info at all

My gt grandads elder brother, John Francis Mahoney Pte 6129 DLI and 588183 Labour Corps has the reference LC/101B223 page 695.

I looked up the roll page hoping to gain a date of enlistment or discharge but nothing was given. He never earned a SWB so thats a closed avenue. He was awarded a pair BWM and VM.

Where else should I look to find out his DLI battalion? The Mahoney bit of the burnt series obviously got burnt aswell.

Suggestions?

I would suggest that your great uncle was in the 1/8th Battalion. His number is in the following sequence that I've checked wrt the online MICs from 6123/301778 to 6139/301794:

6123/301778 - kia 5th Nov 1916, 1/8th Bn.

(6124)

6125 - kia 5th Nov 1916, 1/8th Bn.

(6126)

6127/301782 - kia 5th Nov 1916, 1/8th Bn.

(6128)

6129 & 588183 LC

6130/301785 - kia 10th Apr 1918, 1/8th Bn.

6131/301786

6132/301787

(6133)

(6134)/301789 - 5th Reserve

(6135)/301790 - 8th Bn.

6136/301791

(6137)

6138/301793

6139/301794 - kia 5th Nov 1916, 1/8th Bn.

So, where specific data is available 8th Battalion is stated*. If a check of the DLI BWM/Vic medal roll in the region 301770-301800 gives a return of 1/8th Battalion men, then you will have a fair degree of certainty that this was indeed your great uncle's battalion.

It is possible that your great uncle was wounded on 5th Nov 1916 and was subsequently downgraded for service with the Labour Corps.

[*Apart from Pte, 301789, Fred E Gledhill, 5th (Reserve) DLI. I suggest that this man and possibly 301790 are good SWB candidates, and so should give an indication of when your great uncle enlisted.]

All the best and let us know how it works out.

Bloody nora Stuart - I owe you big time!!

I think it looks like you're right about the battalion but I'll get around to checking that. He was from London and I have been sent a picture of him by by newly discovered Mahoney relatives, its the only one in existence. He died in Fulham in 1950 aged 72.

The only thing I'm a bit confused on is where you say check the DLI medal roll for BWM & VM for 301770 - 301800, is that not the Labour Corps number? Or are you suggesting I call the roll for the 1/8 DLI and check it that way? Phewee mate!!

Once again thanks for the info - and thanks also to Coldstreamer too, havent been rude just run of my feet here at work in the MOD!

Hi,

Yes, I mean run a check on the DLI roll for the numbers in the range that your great uncle would have been issued with if he hadn't been transferred to the Labour Corps. If all these men are 1/8th Bn. then it swings (but doesn't prove) the balance a long way towards your great uncle also being 1/8th Bn.

Also, I mentioned that Pte, 301789, Fred E Gledhill, 5th (Reserve) DLI may be on the SWB roll and will give an indication of enlistment date. It is also worth checking the MICs for other SWB men in this number range since any similar enlistment dates will stengthen the data.

Best of luck,

Stuart
