sylviashearer Posted 8 January , 2007 Share Posted 8 January , 2007 Can anyone tell me anything about the years 1916 to mid 1918. The ship I am interested in is the Amethyst which was off the SE Coast of S. America. Am I right in thinking these ships were keeping the trade routes open and there in case of further trouble in the area? My father-in-law talked about playing the bagpipes on the Glasgow which he had also done in the Dardanelles. Any information will help fill in all my gaps. Kind regards Sylvia
Michael Lowrey Posted 8 January , 2007 Share Posted 8 January , 2007 Sylvia, Generally correct. One of the primary things ships like Amethyst were responsible for was guarding against German surface raiders. Yes, there were some, even in 1916. In fact, Amethyst had a near encounter with the Möwe in January 1917; the German raider sank a collier from which the British cruiser had refueled two days earlier. Best wishes, Michael
