Any railway buffs out there?

I'm trying to find out for which railway company a Manchester station employee would have worked in WW1

Can anyone help please?

Depends on which station, Roy. The following isnt guaranteed as stations were be used by different companies but likely:-

Central - Cheshire Lines Committee

Exchange - LNWR

London Road (now Piccadilly) - LNWR

Victoria - LYR

Ian Hislop's programme this week showed the war memorial at Victoria, I think

Many thanks.

My Grandfather (see avatar) once said that one of his brothers was Stationmaster at Manchester but pre or post WW1, I don't know. Less still did I know that there were four stations!

Thanks again.

Less still did I know that there were four stations!

But only two now - Piccadilly & Victoria.

Exchange & Victoria were next to each other and, between them, claimed the longest platform in England (an honour now held by Gloucester).

Central is now an exhibition centre. Years ago, I had a boss who, I seem to remember, said his father had been stationmaster there.

Those were the days, eh? Steam engines. Jumpers for goal posts. Etc

Glad to have helped.

There are three memorials in Victoria Station. These were all taken during the VE 60th Anniversary in 2005:

This is the one seen on Ian Hislop's programme the other night. It's much more impressive in real life with the rail network map of old above.

Plaque to them members of the manager's office.

This poignant plaque is above a disused door.

If anybody would like higher resolution pictures, let me know.
