I am trying to find out as much information as possible about this ship, and a photograph if possible. Can anyone help me? From my own research I have uncovered the following:

Built at: Germaniawerft Dockyard, Kiel

Displacement: 1051 tonnes (822 tons The Grand Scuttle)

Length: 79.5 m (oa); 78.6 m (cwl) (261 ft The Grand Scuttle)

Breadth: 8.36 m (27 ½ ft The Grand Scuttle)

Draught: 3.74 m (fwd); 3.45 m (aft) (11 ft The Grand Scuttle)

Revs: 630 rpm

Speed: 34.5 kts (max); 34.0 kts (des) (34 knots The Grand Scuttle)

Range: 1685 nm @ 17 kts; 1300 nm @ 20 kts

Oil: 299 tonnes

Armament: 3 x 3.4" guns

6 x 19.7" torpedo tubes (6 x 20 in "The Grand Scuttle")

24 mines

Launched: 16.01.15

Commissioned: 20.08.15

At Battle of Jutland 31.05.16

Interned Scapa Flow after 22.11.18

When interned, was moored on North Eastern end of Rysa in Scapa Flow (East of Hoy). The boats were moored by flotilla, chained together in pairs or threes with only one of each being occupied to save fuel-oil. They were very uncomfortable except in the calmest of weather. Thirty-two sank and eighteen were beached or settled in shallow water without going under.

Scuttled: 21.01.19

Raised: 03.07.25

Broken up at Scapa Flow.

Member of No. I Flotilla, with G38, G40 (Leader), G86, V129, S32 and fought at Jutland

Thank you for reading this.

Edward

She was at Skagerrak, leading the 1st Halbflottille

http://www.gwpda.org/naval/jutob.htm

She was from the peacetime 1914 order, built to the original plans for this class.

Later vessels, not distinguished by any special designation, were lengthened - more oil - 1800 nm range, and were armed (rearmed) with x105mm.

Hi Edward,

I am at the moment reading a book called "Cox's Navy" about Ernest Cox who salvaged a large proportion of the interned German fleet at Scapa Flow. G39 was raised on the 3rd of July 1925 and was the 14th vessel that Cox raised.

Some other books that may be of interest are

Cox's Navy by Tony Booth

Jutland to Junkyard by S.C. George

The Grand Scuttle by Dan Van Der Vat

Hope this is of some use,

Donny

Dear Danny,

Thanks for this. I have read the last two but not the first. I'll try and get a copy.

Regards

Edward
