martingo Posted 9 December , 2006 Share Posted 9 December , 2006 hello In May 1915 a standard model of respirator to protect the troops against gas attacks was decided upon and put into manufacture, to be made by women in a factory in South London. The respirators failed to appear at the front, however. J.S.Haldane drove down to the factory in south London ... 'About two hundred girls with rubber gloves in tatters and burnt fingers were struggling with the work and no more rubber gloves could be got in London.' Carbonate of soda was supposed to be used to wet the materials used in the respirators, but caustic soda was being applied instead. This rectified, 'hundreds of girls were set to work' and were making a hundred thousand a day. Does anyone know where in South london this factory was located? Do any personal records survive of the women making these masks in 1915? thanks Martin
