Gentlemen (and women), tried a search to no avail and the Wardrobe isnt open tonight!!

one of todays buys is to a Private in 1st Btn Wilts Regt. 6000 number so an early one and qualifier for 14star and bar . he is recorded as ...

'Subsequently discharged 9th March 1917 reason Termination of first period of engagement. And issued a Silver War Badge number as per mic below '

Question being (as I have a copy of Wilts Regt rolls) is that

a/ why discharged at the end of engagement when the war still had a year and a half to go and

b/ MIC shows a SWB but rolls do not? the swb number is not in the same style as general issued ones being prefixed rather than normal number only ones.

any light as the wardrobe is dark at the moment.

You say that you have the Wilts Regt Rolls, which rolls?

The note SWB List C/882 shows the SWB is recorded by the Exeter Record Office on page 882 of its SWB roll. The Exeter office administered the DCLI, Wilts, Hamps, Dorsets, SLI and Devons.

What is the source for the date of discharge. Pre-war soldiers were discharged at the end of a period of engagement during the war if they wished, certainly until 1916.

Hugh

the rolls are the medal rolls recently published by 'the wardrobe' , 14star, 14-15 star, bwm and swb.

the discharge date is from the 14 star roll, 1/091 (1st btn /page 91). and the bwm roll

Chaz,

There may not be any answers for you. I looked at the relevant roll for SWB and his page, C/882, is officially missing from it. See below, from WO 329/3018
