I have an RFC Patrol Dress Visor Cap marked “Maitland” on the swet band and possibly “J. Ingles Maitland” but the “J Ingles” is difficult to discern.

I looked up medal cards for Maitland’s in the National Archives in the U.K. and found one for a “J. Maitland” in the R.F.C. at catalogue reference WO/372/13 and image reference 14475

His “Corps” is listed as R.F.C. and rank appears to be Captain or possibly Corporal – it’s abbreviated so I can’t tell if the abbreviation is for Captain or Corporal.

His “Regt No.” is 6701.

Next to the medal category “Star” is written in ink “1915” and then under the column labelled “Roll” is written “RFC/1A” and next to that under the column labelled “Page” is the number “66.”

“Theatre of War first served in” is written “(1.) France” and for “Date of entry therein” is “27.7.15”

Can anyone help ? Do you have access to the roll and page number? Do you know what his first name or middle names were or what rank?

I believe the ranks is Corporal. He has an R.F.C. number which an officer would not have.

This would have been his rank in 1915. He may have risen higher in rank later inthe War.

Also his Victory Medal and British War Medal are not on the card. I suspect that there is another card around for these.

Steve.
