clare bridger Posted 26 November , 2006 Share Posted 26 November , 2006 This is the service record of my husband's Grandfather. Please could someone tell me what it all means, particularly in the columns ship, rating and character & ability. He didn't seem to stay in for very long. What does discharged to shore mean - was he injured? Thanks Clare
joseph Posted 26 November , 2006 Share Posted 26 November , 2006 Hi Clare, Henry joined up for hostilities only at the age of 28 on the 21/07/1915 as a Probationary Artisan (Carpenter). On the 11 /09/1915 he was Discharged Shore to return to Civil Occupation. His conduct was Very Good but his ability could not be assessed. President II was an accounting base. clare bridger Posted 26 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 26 November , 2006 Thanks Charles. That makes it a bit clearer. I think he joined the RFC later. I'll need to check on that though. Clare
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 26 November , 2006 Share Posted 26 November , 2006 I have not found an army medal index card for him online, but the Royal Air Force MICs have not been made available (they haven't even been released yet) so can not be checked. If he did join the RFC you might find him through AIR 78 at Kew. While there look for the naval ratings medal roll in ADM 171, there might be a comment that his medals were supplied by the Air Ministry, that's a long shot.
