I am trying to do some research for my English wifes grandfather.

I have downloaded the Mic, but have no idea as to its meaning.

I have tried to take a photo but it doesn't come out. I will try and duplicate it here.

I know hw died of wounds, as I have the original letter from his CO saying he would be home soon and then he died.

Many thanks in advance.

Fenwick Charles Stevens,

Originally served with the West Somerset Yeomanry as a Sergeant, regimental number 509 (probably enlisted some time soon after 1908 when the Territorials were reorganised). Possibly served off in the Empire during 1914-15 to replace regular cavalry that moved to France. Hence the Territorial Force War Medal, which was issued to those Territorials that served overseas early in the war but who were not entitled to the 1914 or 1914-15 star.

After that he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in a Territorial Force battalion of the Royal Lancaster Regiment. The MIC seems to state 3rd Battalion which was a regular reserve battalion rather than a T.F. one.

He died on 7th September 1918.

All the info with Vs and 1s refers to correspondence which probably related to the issue of his medals after his death.

The rest "Victory x OFF/101 81" means that his medals were issued from the King's oWn (Royal Lancaster) Regiment Medal rolls from the book referenced Officers 101, on page 81.

The x's tell the engraver what details to put on what medals.

There was some correspondence on the medals in 1922, but by all accounts these references are dead-ends research-wise.

Steve.
