Matt Dixon Posted 15 November , 2006 Share Posted 15 November , 2006 Can anyone tell me about the badge on this chaps tunic. Is it an observors badge? His name is Oswald Nixon and he is buried in Serre Rd No 2 having been killed in his first flight over enemy lines. He looks too young to be flying a plane let alone going to war.... Jerrymurland Posted 16 November , 2006 Share Posted 16 November , 2006 Anyone add to the story as he's down as a Pilot here? Many observers went onto train as pilots, this picture was probably taken before he qualified as a pilot. Jerry
Muerrisch Posted 16 November , 2006 Share Posted 16 November , 2006 The observer's badge was known as the flying a******e, for obvious reasons.

Cnock Posted 16 November , 2006 Share Posted 16 November , 2006 Seems that NIXOn was indeed the pilot of the Sopwith Strutter- 70 Sqn, that was shot down by German ace Lt. Erich BÖHME - Jasta 2. The observer Lt. R. WOOD was wounded and pow, later went to Holland. Regards, Cnock
